FAQWhat is a 'Green Roof'?
A green roof is a roof of a building which is partially or completely covered with plants. It may be a tended roof garden or a more self-maintaining ecology like a green wall or breathing wall.
Green roofs can be used in many applications, including commercial, industrial, government and residential applications. In Europe, they are widely used for their storm water management and energy savings, as well as their aesthetic benefits. Green roof systems may be modular, with drainage layers, filter cloth, growing media and plants already prepared in movable, interlocking grids, or, each component of the system may be installed separately in layers. Green roof development involves the creation of "contained" green space on top of a human-made structure. This green space could be below, at or above grade, but in all cases the plants are not planted in the "ground". Green roofs can provide a wide range of public and private benefits.
What can a 'Green Roof' do for me?
Green Roofs include the protection of waterproofing, water retention, thermal insulation, improvement of the climatic environment as well as new natural habitats for flora and fauna. No other architectural style provides such a wide range of positive effects for buildings, inhabitants, and the environment. Thus, Green Roofs meet one of the essential conditions of sustainable development, the reconciliation between economy and ecology.
What if I have to fix my roof?
Green Roof systems are pre-grown extensive modular system that can be partially dismantled and reinstalled without destroying the green roof. So if you need to make a roof repair of any kind only the selected area is dismantled. Unlike other layered systems that would have to be destroyed to make repairs and service, our system provides 100% flexiblity.
Will any damage be done to my roof during installation?
No. Our extensive modular system is designed as an addition to the existing roof. Our flat roof system is interlocking and will not shift or move.
Will the plants survive in our region?
Yes. We work very close with our growers our pre-grown system is a 2 - 6 month process; every order is specifically grown for the individual project, region and climate, regulated by our on staff horticulturist. The most common plant material is a flowering succulent that will perform through all seasons with little maintenance.
How much does it cost?
The overall cost is determined by the total square footage, site prep (If any), options (Such as boarders, irrigation etc.), access to the roof and other variables. A relative straightforward installation is less then the square foot cost of a brick or paver walkway. Our system is affordable and significantly less expensive than other roof systems. Upon the latest studies the roof system will pay for itself in just a few years.
What type of warranty is available for my Green Roof?
The Green Living™ Roof system components are warrantied for 15 years plus 5 years on workmanship. You can also maintain a plant warranty with a maintenance program usually consisting of 3-4 visits per year. Every year you renew the maintenance we renew the plant warranty. As you extend the maintenance agreement we extend the warranty.
How long will it take for my Green Roof to fill in?
Unlike traditional layered roofing systems the Green Living™ Roof pre-grown extensive system is delivered in its finished form, mature and ready for installation. This eliminates plant establishment costs typically paid out in maintenance allowing for immediate benefits as opposed to waiting an average of two years.
How long will the Green Roof last?
Your green roof will double or triple the life expectancy of your existing roof membrane. Since the green roof is a living plant, it will last indefinitely. The water retention mat / root stabilizer and drainage carrier life expectancy is over 70 years!
What kind of plants can be grown?
The basis of the the Green Living™ Roof pre-grown extensive system includes a variety of low growing Sedum. Since each order is grown to specification we can design a color or pattern based on your selection of plant material or include the use of some native grasses
Can I install a green roof on a pitched or sloped roof?
Yes you can! Our Green Wall technology was developed to use with sloped roofs over 20 degrees (4:12 pitch).
